What this is, and what it is not

Sunrise and sunset times at Angkor Wat for any day, where the sun comes up on the horizon, and the forecast sky for the next seven mornings. Free, with no account.

The sun's times are worked out on your device with the US weather agency's solar calculator, for Angkor Wat's own position. They are for a flat horizon: trees and the temple itself make the sun appear a few minutes later.

The sky is a weather model's forecast for the area, not an observation and not a promise. It changes as the day comes closer, and the page asks for it again every half hour.

A horizon is called open when less than a quarter of the sky is low cloud, and blocked when more than six tenths is, or when fog is forecast. The week's clearest morning is the one with the least low cloud, then the least chance of rain.

Around the March and September equinoxes the sun rises due east, in line with the temple, which was described in the journal Science in 1976.

You need an Angkor Pass. Its official seller says a pass bought after 4:45 pm for the next day also lets you in that evening for sunset. Prices and opening hours are on its site.

Questions people ask

What time should I be at Angkor Wat for sunrise?

Before first light, when the sky starts to colour: about twenty minutes before the sun rises. The page gives both times for any day you choose.

When does the sun rise behind the central tower?

Around the two equinoxes, when it rises due east. The page gives the two days for any year: choose a day in that year and read the line under the horizon.

How far ahead can I plan?

The sun's times for any day, years ahead: they are arithmetic. The sky for the next seven days only: beyond that no forecast is worth reading.

Which months have the clearest mornings?

Cambodia's dry season runs from about November to April, and clear mornings are more common then. For a given week, read the forecast above.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere. The page keeps your language in your browser. To get the forecast your browser asks Open-Meteo, which sees your IP address and Angkor Wat's coordinates, the same for every visitor.
